These are voluntary fires before the harvest of the sugar cane! Traditionally, the fields of sugar cane are burned to scare off snakes and other venomous animals, and facilitate the access of the cutters to cleared up fields and clear the stalks of their dead leaves and parasitic plants. These spectacular fires burn intensely and go out very quickly.
