What a place for a picnic! by Franz

Posted on 2018-05-08

After visiting Persepolis, our group went on to Naqsh-e Rustam, the Achaemenid necropolis 12 km from Persepolis. Before we took a closer look at the four tombs high up in the cliff wall, we had a picnic which our driver had organised for us - cakes and water melon, coffee and tea. So we got to enjoy two nice things simultaneously - good food and drink, and a splendid view of what was to come!

Stepy Village (Masuleh- iran)

Stepy Village (Masuleh- iran) by Alimohammad

Posted on 2018-09-30

Masuleh architecture is unique. The buildings have been built into the mountain and are interconnected. Courtyards and roofs both serve as pedestrian areas similar to streets. Masuleh does not allow any motor vehicles to enter, due to its unique layout. It is the only city in Iran with such a prohibition. However, the small streets and many stairs simply wouldn't make it possible for vehicles to enter.

The spectacular architecture of Masuleh is popularly known as "The yard of the building abo

Another view of yesterday's Amir Chakhmaq complex, with a tear-shaped wooden structure in the foreground. This is called a nakhl. A nakhl (Farsi for date palm) is used as a symbolic representation of Hussein ibn Ali's coffin. On the tenth day of Muharram, during the Ashura procession, the nakhl is covered in black velvet and carried from one place to another, resembling an Imam's funeral.
The Yazd nakhl is the biggest such structure, and for carrying it several hundred men are needed, as
