When we visited the island fortress of Trakai near Vilnius in August, a medieval fair was taking place, with artisans performing their age-old crafts, musicians performing music from the Middle Ages, and stalls selling everything from food to clothes to all kinds of artifacts.

Here a kind of goulash is boiling in a large kettle over an open wood fire. Unfortunately we didn't stay long enough to sample it ...

I made two tours of the Baltic States as a tour guide.

Three muses from classical Greek mythology above the entrance to the Drama Theatre of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. They are Calliope, for epic poetry; Melpomene, for tragedy; and Thalia, for comedy.

I cannot pass them by without taking their picture.

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is famous for its wealth of baroque (and other) churches. it is said that no matter where you are in the city, you will always see the steeples of at least three churches.
