Sossusvlei is found in the southern part of the Namib Desert. The area is a salt and clay pan that is surrounded by stunning red sand dunes. The dunes are in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Many people make the pilgrimage to this remote place to soak up the beauty of this extraordinary environment.
I feel privileged to have met and been welcomed by a tribe of Saan people. Scientific and anthropological research now leads scientists to believe they bear the origins of the human race. These hunter-gatherers are also considered as the first inhabitants of what is now Botswana and South Africa. I was captivated by their generous disposition in sharing time and their lifestyle with me.
The famous Swakopmund jetty, with a beautiful restaurant situated right at the end of it. We had dinner there that evening and it was quite unnerving to feel the restaurant moving as the waves moved below us. Not sure if it's still like that, but this photo was used for the cover and back of their latest menu - they saw the image on one of my sites and asked if they could use it.
Spitzkoppe "is a group of bald granite peaks or bornhardts located between Usakos and Swakopmund in the Namib desert of Namibia. The highest outcrop rises about 1784 meters (5857 feet) above sea level. The peaks stand out dramatically from the flat surrounding plains. The highest peak is about 700m above the floor of the desert below."
Solitaire is a small settlement in the Khomas Region of central Namibia near the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It has the only petrol station, post office, bakery and general dealer between the dunes at Sossusvlei and the coast at Walvis Bay, as well as to the capital Windhoek. Great coffee stop
