Crushing spices

This lady is grinding fresh spices with her stone pestle. I could smell the heady aroma from where I was standing. The Tharu people live in villages near the forests of Chitwan in the South of Nepal. They hunted and cultivated seasonal crops, and to this day still crop and hunt small animals. They build huts from natural local materials. They value family and are very proud of their children. The Tharu people are a curiosity in today's world as they are resistant to Malaria.

Walking to Ramkot - 8

Walking to Ramkot - 8 by : Helen :

I am fascinated by the ingenious ways the Muchuk people utilised materials around them to create what they need. On a hot day a baby seemed so cool and comfortable cocooned in this green cloth that allowed the air to pass through it. View this scene from further away

Chitwan safari - 4

Chitwan National Park, Nepal

Flag of NP

When on safari I was startled by the guide who leaped up and pointed to the right into the trees. I swung my camera and clicked.(see photograph here)I couldn't see anything at all! Suddenly I saw it, a rhinoceros! The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) became unsettled, then began to run and circle around towards our jeep! I was as exhilarated as scared as this unpredictable monolithic animal belted across the road in front of us.

A tribute to Nepal

A tribute to Nepal by : Helen :

This photograph was taken in Patan Durbar Square, Kathmandu prior to the 7.8 magnitude earthquake April 25, 2015. I pause to reflect on the local peoples and tourists who have survived this traumatic event and also pay tribute to those who have so tragically lost their lives. The loss of life and significant and unique historical artefacts will be felt the world over. Rest in peace.

Nepal - Final tribute #8

Nepal - Final tribute #8 by : Helen :

This wonderfully friendly family were very timid, incredibly generous and welcoming.

Many villagers from the small farming hamlet came to greet me as well. The old grandmother decided that I should stay. At that moment, I wished that I could have.

Such people touch your heart profoundly. With little language in common, we were able to reach across borders and language barriers and make ourselves understood. These people, I will never forget.

Mountains - Pokhara

Para-gliders - Pokhara by : Helen :

Posted on 2014-08-07

I took this photo from the lake in Pokhara, Nepal. It was a glorious day. I lounged back in the canoe watching the para-gliders swirling on the air currents produced by the nearby mountains. Situated alongside the Annapurna mountain, Pokhara boasts three out of the ten highest mountains in the world — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna 1 and Manaslu; all less than 50 kms or 30 miles away.
