Standing there, above so much glacier ice in person , is a humbling experience. Enjoy them and take your kids to see them while you can.

skogarfoss waterfall iceland black and white

Skogarfoss, Iceland by John Leech

Iceland excels at waterfalls. The good ones are so good that you end up driving past ones which you'd stop and study for days if they were back here in England. Skogarfoss is my favourite of the ones we saw, and its clear to see why it features on so many advertisements for the country, its proportions are perfect. Two photographers were already in position when the three of us arrived and several other appeared before we moved on.

Vik Church, Iceland

Vik Church, Iceland by Ian Bramham

This was photographed at night in the small coastal town of Vik in Iceland and shows the town's lovely church which is perched on a beautiful spot high up on a hill overlooking the Atlantic ocean.

Like many towns in Iceland Vik is located very close to a volcano and a glacier. The volcano in Vik hasn't erupted since 1918 and is long overdue. The worry for the inhabitants is that when it does eventually erupt again it may melt enough ice from the glacier that the town will be washed away.

Strokkur Geyser Eruption, Iceland

When Earth Sneeze by Devendra

Posted on 2019-03-05

When cold water on surface flows down through these gaps and meets super hot lava / rocks, it boils quickly and the water vapours + hot water erupt out causing the phenomenon called Geyser.

Alternate Perspective: I like to think of Geyser something like Earth's Sneeze.

Raw Energy

Given that we have photographed this waterfall in wide angle from many a perspective, I had my 70-200mm lens ready when we went for a walk there during daytime hours. I was not especially committed to taking photos but after previous visits I had a vision to catch the power of the falling water in a possible close up shot.

We could never tire of sitting right on the edge of Dettifoss, watching the massive amounts of water falling down and hearing the thunderous noise accompanying the flow.

iceland 2014, arnastapi, rocky shoreline

rocky shoreline by Franz

I spent three and a half remarkable weeks in iceland this summer, taking three groups of mostly german tourists around the island. despite less than perfect weather conditions we all had a great time and saw fantastic and unforgettable places.

This image was taken near a village on the snæfellsnes peninsula called Arnastapi, which is well-known for its rugged and exceptional shoreline, with steep cliffs, exposed basalt columns, deep inlets and natural bridges.

I haven't been out shooting much, so I have returned to our images of Iceland from last year. It's always nice to return to Iceland.

Strokkur Geyser, Iceland

Yet another eruption by Devendra

Posted on 2019-03-04

Geyser is a Hot Spring in which water intermittently boils, sending a tall column of water and steam into the air. This image is a pan of several images in an attempt to capture the whole action and present it in one frame.

Silver Streams

Silver Streams by Darkelf Photography

Posted on 2016-01-27

This is a view from the east bank of Jökulsá á Fjöllum river in northern Iceland, near the Selfoss waterfall.

Luckily, the wind was blowing away from the camera and kept the water spray away from my filters. I was fascinated by the various flows in the scene before my eyes. The smooth texture of the clouds, vertical streams running down the cliffs and horizontal flow of the river working in unison together.

iceland, west coast, aerial photo

iceland from the air (2) by Franz

This is the coast north of Reykjavík. the town of Akranes is on the spit of land in the distance. clearly visible are a golf course, drainage ditches (common all over the island), the scattered farms - and the absolute lack of trees!

The snow-covered mountains on the far horizon are on the snæfells peninsula, more than 100 km away.
