A full moon rises over California oak-lined hills.

California, United States

Flag of US

I love shooting moonrises just as they peak their head over the horizon, especially if I can get a tree nearby to give a sense of scale. The moon is still catching the last warm light rays of the setting sun, thus explaining its warmish cast. The size of the moon always looks big on the horizon as we have scale and depth clues available from the surrounding terrain thus creating an illusion of size.

Humanity...enduring the storm

St. Louis, Missouri, United States

From the sculptor Daniel Lawrence, "This piece embodies that we are primarily vessels, containers of life that express life by means of three distinct capacities; the ability to know, the ability to love, and the ability to desire. Knowledge, Care and Technology obviously fit right over this model of human self."

Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church) is a baroque church located on the south side of Karlsplatz in Vienna, Austria...

i spent one evening there, sitting around the pond and taking quite a few shots... i was lucky enough for people to leave the water quite undisturbed so the reflections came through very still - like a mirror...

"Out of the Blue"

United Kingdom

Flag of GB

I was lucky enough to get a full days photography last Saturday with John Leech and Mike Spriggs and we ended up at the lighthouse at the Point of Ayr in north Wales at dusk.

There were quite a few photographers there but the anticipated sunset never really materialised and everyone but John and I had left the beach as night fell. I'm glad we didn't leave with the others as 'out of the blue' we were lucky enough to witness the most amazing moonrise that either of us has ever seen.

skogarfoss waterfall iceland black and white

Skogarfoss, Iceland

Flag of IS

Iceland excels at waterfalls. The good ones are so good that you end up driving past ones which you'd stop and study for days if they were back here in England. Skogarfoss is my favourite of the ones we saw, and its clear to see why it features on so many advertisements for the country, its proportions are perfect. Two photographers were already in position when the three of us arrived and several other appeared before we moved on.

Trick or Treat ...

Bejuma, Venezuela

Flag of VE

A few days ago I found a dead butterfly in my garden (usually I don't photograph dead insects) and I was impressed by the beauty of the drawings and the "eyes"on its wings. I took the wings and began placing them together in different ways and suddenly I noticed this fabulous face in them ... Of course, I had to photograph it and share it with all of you ...

"joyce is not here"

Peel Street, Hong Kong

Flag of HK

To some, this is one last remaining "old streets"; to others, it's where they just come for foods, traditional or trendy;
To some, it's a fascinating mix of cultures; to others it's the invasion of the old living by some pretentious bourgeois...
To me, it's a street I have to pass by at least once a week but my photographing of it never seems to be finished.:-)

old man

Karachi, Pakistan

Flag of PK

From a set of B&W negs that I shot in Karachi in Pakistan in 1990's. Although most were scratched or covered in dust, I had a go at scanning a few (after I processed them 18 yrs ago, I never got round to looking through them or printing any). It was amazing to see these long neglected images come to life on the screen, temporarily forgotten for all those years. I remember that I bought the film stock in Karachi, and that it was 35mm film manufactered in what was then East Germany.

My favorite of the kind. When I was creating it, everything came so easily as it really means something to me, this house in the sky, this garden as well. It looks unusual and however it remains very familiar, a cool environment where friends would like to meet.

God is merciful...this child probably has no idea that there is a life outside of her poverty ridden existence. No wonder she gifted me such a lovely, sweet smile! Can there be anything more generous? Such honor, such courage! She taught me something I shall always remember.

A robberfly macro

Canberra, Australia

Flag of AU

Robber flies are wonderful hunting flies whose eyesight ensures they eat (they don't know how to build supermarkets yet) Instead it's other flies and spiders on the menu.

About those eyes: They are compound eyes. Instead of one lens they see through two spheres with many lenses. Each lens of the compound eye sees its own image, so what the fly sees is like a mosaic. The more lenses, the higher the resolution. The two large spherical eyes of a fly provide an almost complete 360 degree vision.
