Essence of Photography: Change your Perspective

Learn to be a more creative photographer by learning to change your perspective.

March 17, 2022

If you are looking for some ideas on how to become a more creative photographer, try learning to see things from many different perspectives.

One exercise you can try is to pick a single subject in a fixed location, like this big boy statue, and then try to photograph it in various ways.

You can try using an assortment of lenses, shoot at various times in the day, and move your feet to photograph from new perspectives.

The first photo used a wider angle lens (40mm) which makes the buildings in the background look smaller. This next image used a 400mm telephoto lens which makes the background building appear much larger in the frame and compresses the distance between the subject and background which is far away.

In this version, a flash is used to illuminate the subject, which makes the background get darker. It is also taken from a different angle than the first two.

And another angle with flash

When experimenting you can try a variety of effects and filters to see how that changes the image. Here is a version in black and white. Think about how each version changes the mood and feel of the image.

Don't forget to to apply all of the creative tools that you've learned. The next two images used a zoom blur in-camera effect to create a unique look.

These are a few ideas to get you started. Try to spend a week photographing the same object at least once a day if not more and see how many ways you can portray the same subject from lots of perspectives.

Essence of Photography is a series of tips, tutorials, and visual inspiration on a variety of photography skills and techniques.

You can practice these skills and more by purchasing a deck of Photo Cards from Zoom In Reach Out, a non-profit with a mission of teaching to see the world from a different perspective.
